January 01, 2008 is just days away. Start the New Year off right. Prepare your heart spiritually and your mind psychologically to commit to the regular, consistent and consecutive daily reading of your Bible throughout 2008. The information below is from the email I sent out this time last year.

Millions recite The Lord’s Prayer every week. Entire congregations say it in unison. I’ve observed little children mouthing the words along with crusty old men. Cool teenagers, corporate executives and little dainty old ladies blend their voices together....  “Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

Today it’s different. Back then it was horrible. To be born blind was to live a life of hardship, rejection and poverty. Think of the shame and humiliation of daily having to pester others for something to eat. Being the unattractive town nuisance was the only way to survive. Blindness meant rags, loneliness, hunger, shunning and discrimination – not to mention the daily darkness of the absence of light

As a newcomer, I just thought it was a parade. But something was wrong. The palace officials marching by seemed distraught. I silently watched as six hundred of the Royal Honor Guard went by my house. If it started out as a celebratory parade, something drastic must have happened in the meantime. His Majesty’s bodyguards looked extremely nervous. Why were they leaving the city?

As weak as you claim your brain to be, it is still amazing. If you are studying Economics you can pack it full of economic indicators such as unemployment rates, GDP, GNP, CPI, etc. If you’re into hockey that old brain will retain the stats for the top player, their goals and assists for the year, how your team ranks in the NHL Conference Standings, etc. If you happen to be into Southern Gospel music, you’ll know the names of the different groups, who sings what in each group, and you’ll probably know their top songs as well.

Alone. Look to the left – no one is there. In front of you, behind you and to your right – no one is there. Where are John, Rick, Chris, Carol, Rebecca and Alisha? Maybe they’re late or detained for legitimate reasons. Slowly you begin to realize, they’re not showing up. “But they’re very busy,” you reason. “They’d be here if they could be. I am sure of that.” But slowly your confidence begins to waver as your aloneness becomes more apparent.

Here’s a question to consider: would you say you are living a well-ordered and purposeful life? Do you have goals for the future? As you connect the dots in your life, are you confident they are leading you closer to Christ and His desire for you? Or are you just living rather pointlessly one day at a time without seeing the big picture? How did yesterday go? At the end of the day, was it just a hodgepodge of this and that from sunrise until you hit the sack at night? Can you reflect on yesterday or the last little while and be satisfied that your choices have been deliberately good and your activities positive and purposeful? Or are you drifting somewhat aimlessly?

Nervously you stand behind the curtains. It’s your annual school play. Your costume is hilarious but it complements your role. Your mind is racing as you go over your lines. Any minute now you could get the signal. You mentally race through your act; how many steps forwards, the three somersaults, the pounding of the fist on the table, kicking the garbage can, scowling your face and posturing your body to display outrage, a frantic shaking of your head, your well-rehearsed quip which is actually the punch-line for the entire act. It will all be over in so short a time and then you’ll walk off the stage, with a sigh of relief and guzzle down some water.
