Listen to the loud jangling noise as so many coins crash to the bottom of the trumpet-shaped donation receptacles attached to the walls in the court of the women in the Jewish Temple. There were thirteen containers to catch the cash. There was a steady stream of donors dropping off their cash contributions. Their polished noses held high, they confidently strut up to the temple while the chauffeur driven chariots idled outside. Then there is the deliberate opening of the purse for all to see, and then slowly they dropped their contribution in the container. Did they ask the attending clerk if there would be a plaque mounted on the wall to recognize their gift? That’s what many ask today before they make a large donation to a worthy cause.

Fred: “Why don’t you just try to explain your situation?”

Wayne: “What’s the use?!! They’ll never understand. They’ll tell me to go pound sand. I’ve talked to them before and their eyes just glaze over and I’m sure it all just goes in one ear and out the other. They could care less.”

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever thought: “Nobody understands my situation and to make matters worse – nobody really cares?”

Princess Jehosheba. You probably haven’t seen her featured recently in celeb magazines. In fact, she’s been out of circulation for quite a few years! But her name lives on. It’s indelibly inscribed in the Word of God as a memorial to the brave, decisive and solo action she took for the Lord.

If you could make God happy or please Him today would you try? Sometimes we think we’re pleasing God when really - we aren’t. He sees through it all.

A husband devotes his life to his work and spends his spare time golfing with his buddies. Calls for business on his cell phone are more important to him than cries for attention from his wife. But once a year she receives a bouquet of roses and a beautiful anniversary card from him. It is one of those kissy, lovey, touchy, feely cards dripping with affectionate words. She opens it up, reads it, tries to smile and then places it beside the roses. What is she thinking?

Mike: “We have a blast when we’re all together. I look forward to being with them each week. No one else at school wants to talk about God or discuss the Bible; so for me – having a bunch of peers who have spiritual interests – well, it’s a breath of fresh air!”

Sara: “But you really need to be careful. I’ve met some really nice people. But some of the things they were saying bothered me and I wondered if I should be even getting around with them or not.”

Mike: “Nah! Sara you don’t get it. There’s nothing wrong with hearing new stuff that you haven’t heard where you go. It’s good to be challenged in your thinking. You need to be more open minded.”

“It’s the first time I’ve met you but it’s sure not hard to tell who you are. You’re the spitting image of your dad. You’ve heard the expression, ‘She’s a chip off the old block!’ – well, you’re the chip. The resemblances, even the way you shrug your shoulders and bite your lip – it’s just your dad through and through.”

It’s no big mystery that someone who was born into a family displays resemblances, features and traits of their parents.

Have you ever read your Bible and laughed? There is one chapter that always elicits such an emotional response from me – I can’t keep from laughing. I just happen to think it’s funny. Picture a Christian sleeping in a prison cell whose head is to roll tomorrow by the executioner’s sword. His right wrist is chained to the guard on that side of him. If he rolls over, he is shackled to the other guard on the left. And I doubt if these guys were wimps. The slightest muscle movement would rattle the chains and the guards would jump to duty.

I was once subjected to a three hour psychological examination as part of an employer’s screening tool to weed out unsuitable candidates for a position. Of the hundreds of questions asked, I now remember very few. I do recall at least one of them: “If you were visiting a zoo and the cage door was open and the lion was nowhere in sight, how would you respond?” I figured everyone would probably respond with: “run as fast as you can” but a few wise guys wrote: “jump in the cage and slam the door shut.” In reality, I know one thing for sure – my approach to the zoo visit would change in a flash. I would become much more alert, cautious, sober and deliberate in my moves. The casual stroll would instantly turn into a very guarded walk.
