“But I’m not a reader. It doesn’t come naturally to me.”

Why is it that some who claim to be not-so-great readers can wade through some very complex academic books and pull off a few pretty decent marks? In case you haven’t noticed lately, students lug to class gigantic books loaded with heavy reading, complicated diagrams, complex formulae and baffling perplexities to comprehend. Hard in content, heavy in weight and hefty in price ($75 - $150).

They were the loneliest and saddest days of their lives. Their hopes for the future were shattered. Their reason for living was gone. Now the three years seemed like a dream – too good to be true. Memories powerfully flooded their minds. The incredible looks of joy and gratitude on the faces of family members when He healed their child. The laughs of excitement as the children watched the loaves and fishes multiply right before their eyes. Those beautiful times all alone with Him as they walked and talked together. But now He is gone and the disciples are all alone.

“It’s weird. I go to the gym three times a week but I’ve nothing to show for it. I’m getting discouraged. I think I’ll quit. Others go and their bodies are transformed into trim, well-defined, muscular physical structures. But for me – well it just doesn’t happen. I still have tons of flab, overhangs and everything else. I end up coming home more depressed than ever. The gym does nothing for me. I’m totally disillusioned. I just keep saying to myself: “Archie, what a waste of money your membership was!”

Perhaps you’re not in the ‘mood’ for thanking God today for your many blessings. Things are very difficult right now for you. Your optimism has shriveled up and died. Its parched shell has been picked up by the winds of adversity and has blown to some remote corner to be buried beneath the debris of painful circumstances. You feel more like spreading a towel over your face than spreading His fame.

Flourishing and leafing. It sure sounds like ‘life’. Have you ever seen a stalk of a plant beginning to break out in leaves? There is something refreshing and very alive about the sight. It may have been just a stem and stalk for quite a while but then a leaf breaks out. “Phew! There’s life!” For those with green thumbs – seeing the first leaves appear and then some buds and a flower – that’s pretty big stuff.

The greatest tragedy in life is to miss Christ and die in your sins. The next greatest tragedy is for a Christian to miss their life’s purpose and die not fulfilling the Lord’s will for their life.

Some people enjoy ornithology. Every spare minute they have its birds, birds, birds. They study the shape of their beaks; the contour of their wings; their distinctive colour markings; their songs and calls; their migratory routes and nesting habits, etc. They subscribe to bird magazines and they are scattered around on their coffee tables. Others are deeply intrigued with sportsology. They too subscribe to magazines – but definitely not about birds. They don’t bookmark bird sites in their browser. They know their teams and their scores as well as they know their kids and their ages. And do they ever get excited! For others, it’s the money markets or businessology. Although they aren’t professional investment officers – they do get phonecalls from friends for advice. They know their stuff.

Glittering gold and a sparkling stone – yes, a fancy ring for an incredibly good price. But is it real? Is it genuine? Not that long ago, peddlers appeared in town offering gold rings at a price that was too good to refuse. The rings were stamped 18 carat gold and closely resembled the real thing. The authorities seized at least 12 of the rings. Testing revealed the rings were 80% copper, 13% zinc with small amounts of lead, tin and iron.
