Does this sound familiar? “I’m such a lousy witness – I never tell anyone about Christ. Others find ways to share the good news about Christ with co-workers and friends but me? My lips are sealed. I just don’t think I could do it. But the Lord doesn’t want me to go around feeling guilty all the time or beating myself up over my failure to be a witness, so I will just forget about it. It’s just not one of my things.”

“The Word of God is quick (living) and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12. “…the Word of God which liveth and abideth forever.” 1Peter 1:23.

“It’s hard to put into words. I guess he bugs me so much that even the way he twitches his nose provokes me and the way he says ‘Faaaather’ when he prays annoys me. He just gets under my skin period! He always seems to be able to push the right buttons to get me going. I shouldn’t react but I do. I know he’s just trying to provoke me.”

Job had fallen into hard times. His life fell apart. Three friends gather to comfort and share their opinions on the purposes of God and who was at fault. Eliphaz shared his philosophical musings first. Then there was Bildad the Shuite who kept talking about men of the past – the fathers! And then the younger of the three, Zophar got his two-cents worth in. Things were pretty clear to him - black and white.

Sometimes there can be such unrest in our hearts. Turmoil, anxiety, fears, desperation, bitterness, despondency and darkness can sometimes sweep over us like a spiritual tsunami. It comes in like a wall, traveling at a very fast speed, and knocks us of our feet, carrying us to places we never intended to go in our minds. Moments, hours, days and weeks when we are overwhelmed and wonder if we will ever be able to get up and walk again spiritually.

After driving a borrowed truck 1660 kilometers, the owners told me (smirkingly!!) how many stops I made, how many hours I drove, my peak speeds and how often I exceeded the speed limits. Had I known in advance the truck was equipped with GPS and that I was being tracked and recorded, maybe my foot would not have been so heavy on the gas pedal. Long before engineers developed GPS technology and meteorologists came up with a rain gauge, such recording devices existed in Heaven and people on earth knew about them.

The Bible doesn’t really tell us why a bunch of Egyptians decided to tag along with the Israelites when God led them of Egypt. Maybe some were intrigued or even blown away by the miracles Moses performed with his rod. Others could have been bored with the hum-drum life of living under the rule of Pharaoh, so they decided to do something new. Maybe a bunch of the Egyptian guys thought the Hebrew girls were about as good as they come, so they decided to travel with the Israelites. Perhaps some of the good Hebrew men were convinced the beautiful Egyptian girls had genuinely left their gods to follow the only true God – but they were sadly mistaken. The girls’ hidden agenda for traveling with the Israelites out of the land of Egypt was to snare a future husband.

I can lose a lot of things in life. A job. A wallet. A game. A friend. A loved one. Good health. The list is almost endless but not quite. Powerful life-tsunamis can sweep away every possession I may have in life until they smash up against an immoveable, impenetratable, permanent, insurmountable, unbudging, and secure possession called ‘eternal life.’ This far but no further. Some barriers are made to withstand powerful earthquakes and bomb blasts. They may not be completely removed or obliterated but they can be damaged. But the eternal life of a believer is untouchable and unshakeable and without exception remains unscathed and undamaged despite the most fierce assaults.

A senior citizen went to Bingo the first week after she trusted Christ. She was shocked to hear the swear words and the use of her Saviour's name as a curse word. She had never noticed it before. What had happened? Had the language suddenly changed or had she changed? She had changed. That's what conversion is! One of the signs of new life within - a sensitivity to sin. She decided – “No more bingo for me.” The girls sitting behind me at the skateboard park were using bad language. The skateboarder they were trying to impress came over to them and said: “Hey, go easy on the language!”
