It is Wrong Every Time
Could something be wrong no matter what? Couldn’t there be some extenuating circumstances to justify an exception to the rule?
She seems like a real sweetheart – and she looks like one too! She’s taking the same course you are taking. You find your eyes constantly moving in her direction just like the needle of a compass always finds north. Your mind strays from the lecture and you’re thinking what you might say to her if you were ever alone.
As a Christian, you know you are never ever to marry a non-believer. It is one of God’s most basic and explicit no-no’s! But somehow you have both ended up working on a project together. Maybe you made a few subtle maneuvers to improve your chances of being teamed up together. After the first few evenings working with her, you start thinking that - - -
Excuse me. Let me interrupt your thought patterns. Don’t even let your mind go there. Run as fast as your legs can carry you. You are entertaining a thought that will result in tragedy if you start down that road. But you say: “Well, it’s only a tragedy if I marry an unbeliever. Between now and the time I marry her, if it ever goes that far, she might trust Christ.” Friend, the whole thing is a tragedy. It’s a tragedy when you deliberately take the first steps down the wrong road – it is not just a tragedy when you arrive at the wrong destination.
Ezra was a Jewish scribe in exile in Babylon – a faithful man who studied and followed and taught the Word of God. When he returned to Jerusalem he was shocked at what had happened. Here is what he wrote:
The officials approached me and said,
"The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves
from the peoples of the lands with their abominations,
from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites,
the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons,
so that the holy race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands.
And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost."
God is not a bigoted racist. His reason for commanding His people to never mingle and marry the people of the land had nothing to do with their race. It had everything to do with their spiritual beliefs. God’s reason is no different today. No Christian is ever to marry a non-believer for spiritual reasons. That’s how basic this issue is with God. It has always been a no-no and it still is today. To even toy with the idea, in your mind, is to flirt with disobedience against God. It’s a most serious matter.
The New Testament also gives clear direction on this matter - so clear you don’t even have to pray about discovering God’s will about dating a non-Christian. You don’t have to ask the Lord for direction about whether or not you should go-out with that beautiful unsaved girl or that handsome unsaved guy. He has already given His explicit command. To pray about it, is to launch a challenge to God’s Word. Here’s His command and His accompanying rationale:
Do not be bound together with unbelievers;
for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness,
or what fellowship has light with darkness?
Or what harmony has Christ with Belial,
or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
2Corinthians 6:14-15 NASB
Slam on the brakes today. Stop flirting with disaster. Get off that road. Stop tempting yourself. At any cost – run from the possibility of a romantic relationship with a non-believer.
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
