I am not sure why Bobby McFerrin’s song, “
Don’t Worry, Be Happy” ever became a huge hit back in 1988. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the entire song – just bits and pieces of it here and there. Here’s a snippet of his popular ditty:
Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don't worry, be happy.
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy.
Don't worry, be happy now.
Don't worry, be happy.
Don't worry, be happy.
Don't worry, be happy.
Don't worry, be happy.
But the song is rather empty, wouldn’t you say? Yes, the ideal of not worrying and remaining happy is appealing – but Bobby, what’s your recipe for happiness? How can a person be worry-free?
Happy are all they that put their trust in Him.
Psalm 2:12
Or as The Amplified puts it:
O blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are all those who seek refuge and put their trust in Him!
Whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.
Proverbs 16:20
You trusted Him for salvation. You fled to Him for refuge when you understood how lost and helpless you were in your sins. Remember that time – the very first time you put your trust in Him? Could there ever be a bigger crisis looming on your horizon than the reality of facing eternal punishment in Hell and the Lake of Fire? Crises don’t get much bigger than that! Nothing could be worse! What relief was yours when you sought refuge in Christ. What happiness when you discovered His love and His completed work on your behalf. Who could describe the happiness and rest that flooded your soul when you put your trust in Him.
Saved, settled and secure forever!
But now you have another emergency staring you in the face – another worry and another crisis. Is it a bigger one than the threat of losing your soul in Hell? In the biggest crisis of your life you put your trust in Him and it worked. You were blessed and made happy and the worries vanished. Now today a crisis (very real) but of a lesser sort is crossing your path. Are you able to trust Him this time as well? And what do you think will be the outcome if you put your trust in Him and rely completely upon the Lord at this time? The Psalmist said:
Happy are all they that put their trust in Him. Dear child of God – “
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5. When we rely on ourselves, we’ll have plenty to worry about. When we trust in the Lord, we will experience blessing, happiness and confidence. 1 Peter 5:7: “
Casting all your care (anxious thoughts) upon HIM; for He careth for you.”
“Bobby, sorry but we’re switching to John H. Sammis’ song for happiness. The lyrics are a bit richer. We’d prefer to have “
Trust and Obey” repeating itself in our heads as we go about our routines today.”
When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy with Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
Not a shadow can rise,
Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear,
Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide if we trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy with Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear,
Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss,
Not a frown or a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy with Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
But we never can prove
The delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows,
For the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy with Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet.
Or we'll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy with Jesus,
But to trust and obey.
