Flashing Your Resume Around
Do you have your spiritual CV (Curriculum Vitae) ready to flash around when you are in the presence of others? Do you have your spiritual resume embossed in gold and ready to be distributed to any significant person who happens to be in close proximity? Are all your spiritual accomplishments cited, with a section listing the most significant people you know? Do you engage in name dropping? (Not sure what name dropping means? Look it up. It's deplorable, reprehensible, despicable, gagable, etc.)
There are accepted practices in the secular world that have no application in the spiritual realm. Networking to climb the corporate ladder is very common. Introducing yourself to those who may be able to open doors of opportunity for you down the road is a commonly accepted strategy in the world. Creating resumes and writing cover letters to impress prospective employers is just normal business practice.
But how do you promote yourself spiritually? How do you flash your name around so doors of spiritual opportunity will open? With whom should you hobnob to embellish your spiritual resume? What bigwigs should you get to know so they may be able to make it happen for you?
Have you ever thought about John the Baptist? He played a very significant role. Jesus said that of all the people who had been born, none had a more significant role to play than John the Baptist.
"John - how did you get such high acclaim? How did you work your way into that position of prominence? What cards did you have to play to get where you are today? What strings did you have to pull? Who tweaked and polished your resume for you? Tell us about yourself and just how great you are."
So they said to him, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,
'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."
(John 1:22-23)
"What do you mean - you are 'the voice'? Come on John - you are much more than a voice! You are a big-gun prophet!"
"No, I am just the voice of one crying out in the wilderness. And I am not shouting about myself; I am pointing to the coming One. It's not about me, it's about Him. I'm promoting Christ - not myself."
"But look at the people flocking to hear you. Look at the people who are repenting and you are baptizing them. You even have your own disciples. You could start your own John the Baptist Mega Church in the snobhill area of Jerusalem!"
John answered them,
". among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me,
the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."(John 1:26-27)
"Look, please get it straight! I am just doing the work I was called to do. Don't be occupied with the messenger. Hear the message! There is One whom you don't know yet, but believe you me, I am so insignificant I wouldn't even be worthy to stoop down to undo the strap of the sandals He walks in."
"Do you mean, the crowds are going to switch over to Him and He'll be getting all the attention and you will fade into the background? How do you feel about that?"
"How do I feel about Christ getting the attention and people turning to Him and praising Him and leaving all to follow Him? This is my greatest joy to see people turning to Him. That's what it's all about!"
".this joy of mine is now complete.
He must increase, but I must decrease."
(John 3:29-30)
Are you trying to promote yourself?
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
Warmly in Christ
