The Rock in Your Life
Maybe you feel like King David today. If there were tissues or wipes back then, I wonder how many boxes he would have gone through. Was his nose red from wiping it and were his eyes swollen from crying? There would be the heaves and sobs and the times when he would stand up, turn to the wall and raise his arms with his fists closed, throwing his head back and saying: "O, God!" Did he pace the floor for awhile and then throw himself down on his bed burying his face in his pillow? Or was he prostrate on the hard ground out in some forrsaken place - hiding? Did he sob for a few minutes and then pound the pillow with his fist and say: "God, is there no way out of this?"
At what point in his aloneness and solitude did He just collapse and rest on the Lord? It seems at some point he received strength from the Lord. Maybe he went over to his keyboard equivalent and the words flowed out. Or perhaps he used a portable harp and as he plucked the strings he became poetic:
"Hear my cry, O God: attend unto my prayer.
From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee,
When my heart is overwhelmed:
Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I."
Psalm 61:1-2
"Lord, I feel so far away. So distant - just like I am at the end of the earth. Can you hear my piercing cry or am I too far away from your ears? I feel like I am going under and this is my last gasp. I feel like I am all alone, without protection, out in a flat, open field, surrounded by enemies - just waiting to be shot at. I am completely vulnerable. When I look within, my heart is swamped. Overwhelmed, Lord. Totally covered over with despair. I can't find any escape or shelter. I'm lost. Will you lead me? Take me by my trembling hand and lead me to a resource outside myself. I am so low. Take me to a Rock that is higher than I. I am so fragile and weak. Lead me to the High Rock that is mighty and strong where I will be safe and secure."
Yes we came to that Rock for salvation when we were totally lost and helpless. Did He meet my need then? He sure did. But now an earthquake, a typhoon, or a tsunami has struck. I am completely without strength in this trial and I am blind to any way of escape. Where do I turn this time? Salvation from Hell was one thing - but what about this? I must prayerfully allow the Holy Spirit to lead me in my daily experience to that same Rock - Christ. There is none higher than He. How will He lead me to Christ? Through my prayerful reading of the Scriptures He will minister to my broken heart. As I rest upon Him, He will strengthen me.
Jesus said that the one whose ear is tuned to the His voice and responds in obedience. "He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great." (Luke 6:48-49). The Apostle Paul referred to Christ as the Rock as well. "For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ." (1Corinthians 10:4)
Do you have the Rock in your life?
Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
Warmly in Christ
