Paul's Parting Shot

'Paul's Parting Shot' is probably a poor caption for this Bible Bite and somewhat misleading. There's a certain smugness that we can hardly conceal when we 'have the last word' in a heated debate. We may even gloat over the way we ended a tense discussion - our big parting shot.

Is Christ it?

Yes or no? The correct answer is: YES!

But couldn’t a person have Christ and a bit more or a lot more? Why confine yourself to Jesus Christ? It’s such a big world of ideas out there with many beliefs and philosophies – isn’t it a bit narrow to restrict yourself to just Christ? Wouldn’t a person be okay if they never denied Christ but, on the other hand, were open to a broader range of ideas and a more inclusive spirituality? After all, society is advancing and we know so much more now then they did back in Bible times.

Unprofitable Word Filter for Mouth

"Well, perhaps you don't know the history on that matter. Just let me share with you what was really going on there. I think you'll be surprised - if not shocked. I'm not meaning to be telling 'tales out of school' but sometimes it's just helpful to know a few things."

Please, Please, Let us Give

"I want to give her the biggest rock I can afford. I don't really care if I have to work a hundred hours overtime to buy it. I love her like crazy and I want to give her the best engagement ring I can possibly buy." It's called love.

Check Your Sin Sensor Batteries

There are some great truths to appreciate as a Christian including the absolute forgiveness of sins and the assurance of eternal life. The list is actually quite long. Occasionally a Christian loses perspective and wonders - 'What's so great about being saved? I've still got tons of problems!' And that is true - Christians have trials and struggles.

I am a Pleaser

Maybe you pat yourself on the back and say: "Well, you may be a pleaser but I'm not. I get frustrated with people with that kind of a personality - always wanting and always trying to be a pleaser. They must have many insecurities. As far as I can figure out, they try to earn people's approval and acceptance by being a pleaser. I find them annoying."

Jesus Said Reading Your Bible Is Powerful

So much for the catchy title but did Jesus really say reading your Bible is powerful? Preachers and teachers say that from the pulpit and many other Christians make the same claim - but did Jesus really say it? If you discovered He did would you make a greater effort to read it every day?

"Ultimate Fighting - It's Time to Get Nasty!"

"The gloves are coming off. I've had it up to here. Every time I turn around you're at it again. If that's how you want to play the game, I can play it too. If you want to be nasty - then we'll see who wins! I'm no pushover. I'm not nave. I know what you're up to and I won't let you get away with it!"

Hard to get Direction?

Maybe you clicked on this email with great anticipation: 'Finally, something that is relevant. I need direction. I have been praying and praying but I feel like I am spinning my wheels. I don't think I am getting anywhere. Is there a secret formula for getting direction from the Lord in my life?"

Christian, Grow Up!

Have you ever felt like telling someone: "Give me a break! Don't be so infantile. Smarten up. Would you please grow up!"  Are you frustrated or annoyed with someone's behaviour or attitude?

Failing Again -

The Struggle with Repeat Sins

Sometimes we cry to the Lord and say: "With Your help I will never do that again."  Sadly, we end up repeating the same sin and find ourselves confessing the failure to the Lord again with the same resolve: "Lord, I am truly sorry. Help me to glorify Your Name and not dishonor it openly or secretly."  Sometimes the cycle of failure and confessions leads believers to despair. "Does God even take me serious anymore when I confess my sin?"

Self Mastery

“Ah, I don’t feel like it today. I think I’ll laze around and do not much of anything. I can’t be bothered. You may call me a slacker but really, I find it takes too much effort. It’s easier just to chill and do your own thing. Maybe I give-in to myself too much.”

Achievements and success rarely fall into your lap. When they do, they’re often undervalued and wasted. Easy come – easy go. Spiritual achievements are no different – they don’t just fall into your lap either. Successful Christians work hard and sweat it out at being a good Christian.

Feeling the Wind is One Thing

How could you not feel it! The gale is so strong – it seems to be hurricane force. It’s taking every ounce of energy you have to keep on walking. In fact, it seems the sheer velocity of the wind is pushing you backwards as you try to step forward! It is exhausting.

Ah, what’s the Purpose?

Have you ever slipped into this mode of thinking? "What's the use? Why bother? What's the purpose? What good will it do anyway?"  Most of us have been there at one point or another. It’s not exactly a high time on our journey home to Heaven. You wouldn’t call them great days or bright ones either. Maybe you are there today.

Spikenard or Spittle?

There were a variety of perfumes and ointments on the shop shelves in elegant jars and flasks. We can only imagine how the purchase was made. Maybe it went something like this: “Sir, what’s the best ointment I can buy,” she asked the perfumer.

Glad to have a Christian Onboard

The people in the lunch room are annoyed with you because they want to tell a dirty joke and you’re sitting right there. Your presence makes them uncomfortable and awkward. On another occasion something happened to upset them. They wanted to scream out or as a minimum, mutter a string of swear words but you were close by and they tried to hold it in. And then there are times when they keep nothing in and hold nothing back when you are there. Your Christian testimony aggravates them. They poke and jab you with some stinging sarcasm. They may openly laugh at you for not doing this or going there or watching that.

Anything else for me to do?

When there’s something to be done are you standing in line waiting for the green light to start? Or do you make yourself scarce or unavailable? Do you show up when the bulk of the work is mostly done, hoping that people will assume you did your fair share of the work? Are you the last one to show up and the first one to leave?

Leaders on Overload

“Honey, I feel downright miserable. Out of breath. I think it’s an anxiety attack. My chest feels heavy and I think I’m losing it.”

“Well, dear, the sooner you learn you can’t do everything yourself the faster you will feel better. You just take on too many things and never let anything go. You think you have to do it all and that no one else can do it as well as you can. I wish you would take that motto down from over your desk.

Hating Your Brother

Ouch! Hate is a very strong word. Tone it down a bit. Try: ‘disliking your brother’. Or even ‘take him or leave him’ - a feeling of mere ambivalence towards your Christian brother. Wouldn’t that be better than that awful word ‘hate’?
