Monday Meditations

The ultimate goal of redemption is to make us worshipers. The Lord Jesus Christ said: “…True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:23 ESV)

Worship, while difficult to define, is the result of being occupied with Christ - His person and work.

This weekly meditation is prepared by Dr. Sandy Higgins. Its purpose is to give believers truth to think about and develop in their own minds and hearts throughout the week. Ultimately, as the week progresses, daily worship will result in hearts full of adoration for the Lord Jesus on the Lord's Day (Sunday) as believers gather to remember Him.

Dr. A.J. Higgins is the Editor of the Christian magazine, Truth and Tidings and is well known in many parts of the world for his relevant and clear Bible teaching. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Ruth.

Monday Meditation

June 15, 2009

From the desk of Dr. A.J. Higgins - www.heaven4sure.com

“Thou shalt worship the Lord Thy God and Him only shalt thou serve”

(Matthew 4:10).

In the temptation in the wilderness and the defeat of Satan, the Lord Jesus bound the strong man. The chapters which follow show Him spoiling his goods (Matt 12:29). Satan attacked Christ at a moment of hardship - when He hungered, at a Holy place - the Temple, and on a high mountain. The Lord Jesus responded as a Man dependent on His God. He made three choices in His responses to Satan. Each showed a priority in His life. This third command showed that He would only worship God.

Questions for thought:

1. What choice did the Lord Jesus actually make when Satan tried to offer Him the kingdoms without the cross? Is He saying that He would worship God even if it meant a cross at the end?

2. What is worship? In what sense did the Lord Jesus “worship” God? If worship is acknowledging the “worth” of another, how did the choice of Christ “worship” God?

3. The order of the temptations differs in Matthew and Luke. What is so significant about this change in order? Luke has Matthew’s second temptation as the third and vice-versa.

4. Worship and service are linked. How did the Lord’s life of Service flow from a heart of worship?

This weekly meditation is prepared by Dr. Sandy Higgins. Its purpose is to give believers truth to think about and develop in their own minds and hearts throughout the week. Ultimately, as the week progresses, daily worship will result in hearts full of adoration for the Lord Jesus on the Lord's Day (Sunday) as believers gather to remember Him.

Print this off. Keep it nearby for the week. Jot down your thoughts and responses to each question. What other questions come to your mind as you meditate on this verse?
