The Deity of the Son
"But unto the Son He saith,
"Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever:
a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Thy Kingdom."
(Hebrews 1:8)
The declaration of Hebrews 1:8 is one of the greatest statements of the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Cults may try to twist or rephrase the words, re-interpret the teaching, or deny it. But it stands unshakeable and firm.
Notice that it is not the Psalmist who speaks but God. In Hebrews, the writer of Scripture is never mentioned. All is ascribed to God or the Holy Spirit. The pronouncement from the throne is that the One Who became lower than angels is actually their God and Creator! The Man who was taken to the tree by His creatures, has been exalted to the throne by God His Father.
Angels serve (v.7); but He sits. Angels minister; He maintains all by His power (v.3). When He appears in this world the next time, angels will worship Him (v.6). We have the privilege of worshiping Him now.
Questions to consider:
1. Angels are mentioned 11 times in Hebrews 1:5-2:16 and only twice after that in the entire book. So this section is Christ in contrast to angels. We are told that the law was "ordained through angels" (Galatians 3:19). Christ is superior to angels. Why was this important to Hebrew believers?
2. In verses 7-9, we have the Perpetuity, the Perfection, the Passion, and the Preeminence of His rule.
3. Why will angels worship Christ (v. 6)? Why will we worship Him?
