Monday Meditations

The ultimate goal of redemption is to make us worshipers. The Lord Jesus Christ said: “…True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.” (John 4:23 ESV)

Worship, while difficult to define, is the result of being occupied with Christ - His person and work.

This weekly meditation is prepared by Dr. Sandy Higgins. Its purpose is to give believers truth to think about and develop in their own minds and hearts throughout the week. Ultimately, as the week progresses, daily worship will result in hearts full of adoration for the Lord Jesus on the Lord's Day (Sunday) as believers gather to remember Him.

Dr. A.J. Higgins is the Editor of the Christian magazine, Truth and Tidings and is well known in many parts of the world for his relevant and clear Bible teaching. He lives in New Jersey with his wife Ruth.

His Own Love

"God commendeth His love toward us."

Romans 5:8

The thought here is that God commended His own unique form of love to us. This reminds us that God's love is unique. It is a one-of-a-kind love.  It is unreserved in its scope; it is unmerited in its gift, immeasurable in degree, unselfish in its desire, and unrivaled in its nature. Think of how Calvary commends or reveals God's love to us.

The dark background against which this love suddenly bursts forth is our place as sinners. It was when we were yet sinners, before we had made any move toward God, God made a cosmic move toward us.

Questions to Consider

1.  What do you think it means that God "commended" His love to us? Notice that the same root word is used in Romans 3:5; Romans 16:1 and see if that opens up its meaning.

2.  Why did God have to "commend" His love to us? Why were we incapable of love, recognizing love, or appreciating love?

3.  How does Verse 7 add to the wonder of divine love?
