Heather Tallchief, born in Buffalo, New York lived a largely unhappy
life. She followed the punk rock scene and became a crack addict. Later
she became a nursing assistant but holding on to jobs was difficult for
her. When things couldn’t get much worse, a man 20 years older than her
stepped into her life. He seemed like a nice guy to her. She met his
mother. He wrote poetry and she said if you met him, you would think he
was a very normal guy. But the truth was he did time for murdering an
armored car driver years earlier.
Ms. Tallchief and Roberto
Solis became intimate friends. Although initially concerned about a
goat’s head in his apartment, crystals and tarot cards, she grew to
accept him and trust him. He assured her that their meeting was no
coincidence. Assuringly he called it a predestined relationship and
together they were on a spiritual journey.
He encouraged her to
get a job with Loomis – the armored transport. He showed her movies and
tapes which conditioned her mind. Then on October 1, 1993 she stopped
her Loomis vehicle at the Circus casino hotel, picked up the cash and
then on Solis’ instructions, she drove to a warehouse and together they
loaded the cash into boxes - $2.5 million.
Sitting in a
wheelchair, disguised as an old woman and pushed by Mr. Solis, they
took flight. They arrived in Amsterdam; had a child together and then
she left him. For twelve years she lived as a fugitive, working as a
hotel maid. She tried not to make friends and kept her distance from
everyone. She said: “ I’ve learned how to not have so many close
friends, so I don’t get asked all the questions. It’s a lonely life,
being a fugitive.” (1) After all, she was a fugitive on the run from American authorities.
The
FBI said she was a highly sought after fugitive and the case had been
repeatedly broadcast on crime programs including “America’s Most
Wanted.”
But her 10 year old son was growing curious about his
mom and her roots. He didn’t have a legitimate birth certificate. She
felt she could not hide from her past any longer. She must deal with it
head on.
On September 15, 2005 , after 12 years on the run,
Heather Tallchief walked into a federal courthouse in California
wearing a gray blazer, a pink blouse and pale olive slacks. Calmly she
surrendered. After about 20 minutes, she was led away in handcuffs and
leg irons.
It seems that the mastermind behind Heather’s
criminal activities was Roberto Solis – or at least that is her story.
A master sweet-talking con, he steered her in the direction he wanted
her to go. Satan too is a master strategist in steering people in the
wrong direction. He does not appear with scary horns and a pitch fork.
Smooth, slick and polished, he worms his way into sinners’ lives. The
Bible says he is the father of lies. (John 8:44) Make no mistake about
it, he steers sinners on the road to Hell and assures them “everything
will be okay. Trust me.”
Satan may not write poetry like Mr.
Solis allegedly did, but the Bible says he transforms himself into a
minister of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)
Sin keeps sinners in hiding from God. Sin in our lives makes us
fugitives. On the run from God. Fearful of Him. We try to live
undercover and we camouflage ourselves with a ‘reformed’ lifestyle,
hoping that our sin will not be detected. But God knows where every
fugitive is.
But there is a big difference between how the
courts of our countries deal with fugitives and criminals and the way
God deals with fugitives – those who have sinned against Him. He does
not handcuff you and lead you away to a prison cell in leg irons. The
moment you stop running and come to him and admit your guilt is the
very moment that He says to you: “Forgiven. Pardoned. Freed.”
At
that moment He whispers to your heart: “I love you. I have been waiting
for you to turn yourself in. My Son Jesus died on the cross for your
crimes and for your sin and on the basis of His death, I can forgive
you and fully accept you into my favored circle.”
It is a lonely
business running from God. Life away from God is not very glamorous. It
is a life of fear and unfulfilled potential. You have been on the run
long enough. Come to Christ today. Turn yourself in. And a full and
free pardon awaits you.
