Lower than Angels
“But we see Jesus
Who was made a little lower than the angels
for the suffering of death,
crowned with glory and honor;
that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”
Hebrews 2:9
Angels were the creatures of His making; yet He became, for a little while, lower than angels. This does not mean He was lower morally or inherently. He willingly was born under the law and subjected Himself to it (Galatians 4:4); He took manhood into union with Himself and endured the experiences linked with it of hunger, thirst, weariness, and capability of suffering.
His being made lower than angels was all with a view to the suffering of death. A cross death was ever before Him.
We are told that now He is crowned with glory and honor. Earlier, we are told that Adam was crowned with glory and honor (v 7) as the head of creation. But that place was lost by sin. Our Lord Jesus, the last Adam, triumphed and is now adorned with that glory and honor.
Question to consider:
1. He “tasted death” for every man. What do you think is suggested by the expression “tasted death?” He did not sample it or symbolically pass through it.
2. If, instead of “for every man,” we were to read, “for everything,” what would the distinction be?
3. We are told that this was “by the grace of God.” In the next verse, we are told that “It became Him” or was fitting for Him (God) to save men in this manner. Why was this salvation by tasting death becoming or fitting of God’s character?
