Making Foes into Friends
“When we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son.”
Romans 5:10
God is in the business of making His foes into His friends. “When we were enemies,” reminds us of the natural hostility which existed in our hearts toward God. The enmity was all on our side. Yes, God hated our sins; but His attitude to us was one of love.
How did God go about the business of reconciling us? It was not by compromising His character; it was not by forgetting the problem. He did it by the death of His Son.
It seems as though this position of nearness, this place as a friend to God, caps the wondrous blessings that began in Verse 1: justification, peace, access, saved, and now reconciled.
Questions to Consider
1. How is the marvel of God’s grace enhanced by the expression, “His Son?” Why did the Spirit of God not simply say “by Christ” or “by Christ Jesus?”
2. Notice that in Verse 9 we are justified by His blood; in Verse 10 we are reconciled by His death. Do you see a difference?
3. God wants sinners to become His friend. Does it ever amaze you that God desired your friendship and mine?

This weekly meditation is prepared by Dr. Sandy Higgins. Its purpose is to give believers truth to think about and develop in their own minds and hearts throughout the week. Ultimately, as the week progresses, daily worship will result in hearts full of adoration for the Lord Jesus on the Lord’s Day (Sunday) as believers gather to remember Him.
Print this off. Keep it nearby for the week. Jot down your thoughts and responses to each question. What other questions come to your mind as you meditate on this verse?
