Prime Minister Baptised

Assuming this high ranking official was accompanied by his own staff of secret service personnel and assistants, they must have been amazed at what was happening right before their eyes. Their Prime Minister was preoccupied with something other than the affairs of his country and he had been for days.

Did they whisper behind his back: “He’s losing it! He’s in charge of our nation’s finances and vast resources and he’s not even checking his Blackberry to see how the markets are performing. Obviously, he’s attending to a deep personal priority. This is all so very strange.”

Ethiopia‘s prime minister had taken a trip to Israel. He wasn’t there on a peace mission. Well, yes he was. He was on a personal peace mission. He had many things in life including position and power as Queen Candace’s top official – but he had no peace inside. The country’s financial reserves may have been full to the brim but he himself was empty.

He was returning from Jerusalem and he could barely lift his head up from what he was reading. He could care less about the scenery all around him. He never took his camera out of its bag. His eyes were glued to what he was reading. He was reading Isaiah 53. He was deeply touched as he read about one man who silently suffered, bearing a heavy load of sins He himself never committed.

Out of nowhere a preacher appears, running along side his limochariotusine. The preacher – Philip by name, is welcomed aboard and shares with this troubled Prime Minister the message of Jesus Christ who was ‘wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities.’ Deep within his heart, the Prime Minister, there and then, embraced Christ as his personal Saviour and Lord.

What a thrilling moment it was. His immediate impulse seemed to be: “Wow! I have no time to waste. I immediately want to be identified with this Christ. Something just happened inside me which no one else could see. I now want to make a public statement for all to see that I love this Man who died for me. I want my secret service personnel and attendants to know that I have finally found peace through Jesus Christ my Lord. If my Lord wants me to be baptised, then I want to obey Him.”

As they went along the road they came to some water;

and the eunuch said,

“Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”

And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.”

And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

And he ordered the chariot to stop;

and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch,

and he baptized him.

(Acts 8:36-38 NASB)

Have you obeyed the Lord in baptism as a believer? Since you trusted Christ, have you been baptised as a believer? Any kind of a baptism before conversion counts for nothing. Baptism before a personal acceptance of Jesus as your Saviour is not a part of the Christian faith found in the Bible.

What is preventing you from being baptised? Is it a lack of water? Or is there some other reason why you don’t want to be publicly identified with your Risen Saviour? Are you too timid to ask one of the elders of the local church – the assembly you attend? Remember, He gave His life for you. Is baptism too much for you to do in return? Will you start praying about it? Will you start the wheels rolling this week?

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ
