Have you ever heard anyone say something like this: “Give me a break! There’s more to life than getting all bent out of shape over christian living issues. The Bible is supposed to inspire me, not restrict me in my choices in life. Does God really care about the nitty-gritty details of my life?

God cares more about the nitty gritty details of my life far more than I could ever imagine and much more than I care myself. If He knows the number of hairs per square inch on your scalp and the number of tears you have wiped off your face – then you can be sure He is following your life with great interest.

Just before Moses died he wrote a long poem which most scholars believe is one of the noblest and loftiest pieces of poetry in the Bible. You can read it Deuteronomy 32. There are hundreds of detailed instructions in the earlier chapters of Deuteronomy for God’s people: how to keep their hearts solely for the Lord; how to keep clean physically and free from immorality. There are many instructions on remaining separate from the world around them, refusing to worship idols and showing kindness to the disadvantaged.

But by Deuteronomy 32, old Moses is winding down. Among his last words just after penning the great poem were these:

“He said to them, Set your [minds and] hearts on all the words which I command you this day…
For it is not an empty and worthless trifle for you;
it is your [very] life…”

(Deuteronomy 32:46-47) Amplified

In other words, “If you want to live life to the fullest, if you want to enjoy an abundant life, if you want to live the best possible life the Lord has in store for you, then love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and honor and obey His Word.”

In Deuteronomy 30, Moses reminded the people of God of two options in life. You can either (1) disobey the Lord, do your own thing and suffer the consequences and loss OR (2) you can put the Lord first in your life and enjoy the blessings that accompany obedience. With the two options on the table he then pleads with the people: “Choose life – love, obey and cleave unto the Lord – for He is thy life…” Deut. 30:19-20

The Lord Jesus said that the thief steals, kills and destroys – physically and spiritually. Then He said: “But I am come that ye might have LIFE and that ye might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10. Dear child of God, are you experiencing the abundant life? Moses said: “He is thy life.” The Apostle Paul in Philippians 1: “For me to live IS Christ.”

“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.” (Colossians 3:4)

Tiger Woods? Golfing is his life. They used to say: Wayne Gretzky – hockey is his life. Will someone say about you: “Her? Christ is her life.” Or to you: “That guy? I think God is the priority in his life.”

Are you in the process of choosing something other than the abundant life? Don’t. Make “pleasing and honoring Christ” your chief purpose in life. Then you will know what Jesus meant when He called it an ‘abundant life.’
