Have you ever sighed and said: “What’s the use? Why bother? What’s the purpose? What good will it do anyway?”  Most of us have been there at some point. It’s not exactly a high time on our journey home to Heaven. You wouldn’t call them great days or bright ones either. Maybe you’re there today.

When we lose our sense of purpose we’re on dangerous ground. Without purpose, we’ll not move forward. When we lose sight of purpose our energy and enthusiasm to push forward fizzles and dies. For a time, we will still go through all the motions of our obligations with the precision of mechanical robots – but the heart will not be in it anymore.

Barnabas stressed the necessity of ‘purpose’ to the believers in Antioch. He urged them to stick with it for the rest of their lives.

“…that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.”  Acts 11:23

He urged them to be Christians living for a purpose. People without a purpose accomplish nothing – well, maybe a little more than nothing but not much more. And what a drag living is when we go through a blank period in our lives. Businesses without a purpose go down the tubes. Enterprises without a purpose go belly-up. Politicians without a purpose flounder, grow flat and stale and eventually lose.

What happens to a Christian when the purpose is lost? Any number of things can happen but, for sure, barrenness, staleness and dullness sets in. What’s the purpose for your Christian life? Can others tell you are driven as a Christian by a purpose?

Aged Paul sent Timothy these words:

“…But you have fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, ….” 2 Timothy 3:10

Paul assumed that Timothy, whom he had been mentoring, would have clearly understood that he was a Christian driven by purpose. Purpose is the motivator that catapults us out of bed in the morning. Purpose is the thing that makes us work long hours. Purpose is the anchor that holds us in the stormy waves of life. Purpose is the excitement in our life.  No purpose equals no passion, no energy, and no vision.

Other than mundane necessity, what gets you going for the day?

Have you ever tried writing a one sentence purpose statement for your life – a statement you feel would have merit when you stand before Christ?

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ
