“For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matthew 18:20 KJV

“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”  Mathew18:20 NASB

We are all familiar with this as linked with local assembly testimony. But consider it in light of Matthew’s Gospel. One of the names given to Christ in Matthew 1 was, Immanuel, “God with us.” When we arrive at chapter 28, in departing from His disciples, the Lord says, “Lo, I am with you alway.” The present Christ: present in our world, in our gatherings, and in our service. The background of Matthew 18 is failure and discipline; yet, the Lord links Himself with us in all our weakness and shortcomings.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What does it mean to be “gathered together in My Name?” It can have several possible meanings: We recognize His authority; we reflect His interests; we rely upon His resources; we reveal His Person; we rejoice His heart; we are regulated by His Word.
  1. What are some of the ways we can rejoice His heart when we gather together?
