I am totally ashamed of myself. Today was a disaster.  I felt like a heel. It was one of those roller-coaster days. Initially I was so excited. And then, as the day progressed, I turned into a bundle of nerves. Given my frustration level, I should have been wearing my dental shield to protect my teeth from excessive grinding. Then, I emotionally exploded. Everything worked out in the end and I learned the lesson of my lifetime. But what a day it has been! Needless to say, I am totally fatigued.

It all began when I invited the Master into our home. I thought it would be nice to have Jesus in for a good meal. That was the least that my sister Mary and I could do for Him. In fact, our door had always been open to Him from the very first day that He had won our hearts. The three of us, including my brother, love Jesus. He is the most Special One to ever cross our path.

Anyway, Jesus arrived for dinner and we made sure He was comfortably sitting in the other room, while Mary and I worked in the kitchen. Admittedly, we were hoping to serve some fine cuisine rather than just leftovers. After all, it was such a privilege to have the Master for a meal.  But fine cuisine requires more than throwing a few things together haphazardly. In fact, there was quite a bit of work to do.

Mary is usually a great help in the kitchen, but today, she seemed totally distracted. She helped to a point, but just when things were climaxing, and the meal was finally about to come together, she took off. Out of the corner of my eyes, I could see her sneaking out of the kitchen – not that she was being devious – but what in the world was she trying to celebrate by leaving me on the lurch!

There she was – when I needed her most, sitting at the feet of Jesus in the other room. She was facing Him and just doing absolutely nothing – just sitting there listening to Him, I guess. Meanwhile I was left with everything.  Folding the napkins, polishing the silver, draining the vegetables, mashing the potatoes, slicing the meat – the whole kit and caboodle – if you know what I mean.

Forget about the boiling vegetables on the stove – I was boiling like a pressure-cooker, ready to explode. Every time I glanced into the room and saw her just sitting at the feet of Jesus doing nothing and me doing everything, my blood pressure ratcheted up. Finally, I flew into the room and blew-up at the Master Himself. I said:

“Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?  Tell her then to help me.” Luke 10:40

It just burst out of me. I can still see His eyes looking at me in my frantic and frustrated state. His words are still ringing in my ears as I write this:

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41:42

What a rebuke! But that’s exactly what I needed to hear today, and He said it so tenderly. He was dead on. I was pulling my hair out, worried over serving Him a good meal. However, I learned today that Sitting at the Feet of Jesus is the most important activity to ever happen under our roof here in Bethany.

“Thank you, dear Lord for your gentle rebuke. I am so sorry for my behaviour.  I hope I have learned my lesson. I want to always have a heart that is more occupied with worshipping and meditating upon You than any other activity in my life – including service for You.”

Good night.
