“Just drop it, Elhanan. Some people get the breaks and you’re not one of them. Some people get all the fame, while others fight and win battles in obscurity. Get on with your life and stop living in the past. Jealousy will consume you. Give it up!”

“… if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic…” James 3:13-16

“But I killed a giant too! Everyone talks about David. In fact, I brought down Lahmi, Goliath’s brother and I’m still a nobody. He was no runt. He was like a massive, towering, defiant oak tree. But nobody talks about me. Everybody tells the big story about David and Goliath but whoever mentions me?”

“Elhanan, I hear you! I’m David’s nephew and when we have a family reunion everybody lines up to talk to David. They always ask him to tell the story about the one smooth stone that brought Goliath down. I feel like screaming: “Hey family! Did you ever hear my story? The guy I brought down was like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Absolutely huge – with six fingers and six toes. Yes, I brought him down. My name is Jonathon – I’m in this family too!”

“Elhanan and Jonathon, both of you: cool it. Calm down. You both are mentioned in God’s book. (1Chronicles 20:5-7) You didn’t get the ink that David got but you are mentioned. Did you fight that battle for recognition? Were you hoping to make a name for yourself or did you fight it for the Lord? Were you seeking fame for yourself or were you just doing what was right and what would ultimately glorify the God of heaven?”

The above exchange is fiction for sure. Yes, Elhanan and Jonathon did slay giants but there’s no record in the Bible that they were seeking recognition or fame for themselves. Nor is there even a hint they may have been jealous of the recognition given to David. In fact, they were probably delighted to just be available to the Lord – to be used by Him – at the right place at the right time.

How’s your spirit today? Do you feel like you’re not getting enough place or recognition? Wrong thinking always leads to wrong living.

Read these verses and try to think about them throughout the day.

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. James 3:13-16

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked…” 1Corinthians 13:4-5

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.
