“I love it. Give me more. Tell me more about your expectations. Give me your standards and I will adjust my ways enthusiastically to comply. Let me know your boundaries and I will be thrilled to work inside them always. Tell me what you want me to do and I will do it. Command me to jump and I will ask you: “How high?” Give me the box to think in and I will never think outside the box. I would much prefer to work for you and obey your every dictate and command than to have a multimillion-dollar inheritance fall into my lap. I have gone through all your policies and procedures and quite frankly – they are awesome. Just reading the manual ignites a wonderful fire inside me and I become so excited about my work – my life and my future.”

Where on the planet is this boss? How can I work for him or her? Is it a five-star hotel chain? Is it a leading-edge, innovative, hi-tech Silicon Valley developer? Is it that huge, very successful chain of retail stores? Or, is it all a joke?

Really? You don’t think there’s a single spot on earth where those could be the real sentiments of a person engaged in active duty?

Do you have fifteen minutes to spare? Or, is your life too busy to consider this amazing possibility? There’s an incredible opportunity knocking at your door. Fifteen to twenty minutes is all it would take for you to read Psalm 119.

My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces…Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold…Great peace have those who love your law. Psalm 119:20,72,127,165

Although we cannot be certain who wrote Psalm 119, the thrill and delight of complying with the Lord’s standards, rules, directions, policies, and pronouncements are unmistakable in intensity and sincerity.  The poet, whether it was David or Ezra or some obscure faithful saint, was happiest when he was submitting, complying, honouring, obeying, and surrendering to every detail of the Lord’s will. In fact, he didn’t want to miss or overlook one thing in his service for the Lord. He would turn over every stone looking for more ways to submit and surrender. He would scrutinize the Word of God, search it diligently, study it faithfully and prayerfully, worshipping all the way through as he put it into practice.

How’s my attitude about surrendering my will to the Lord? How is my spirit when it comes to bowing and submitting to the Word of God? Or, do I read my Bible, at times, almost paranoid that I might encounter a truth that would require me to adjust something in my life?  Do I absolutely love getting to my Bible each day to prayerfully read it – systematically and meditatively? Do I crave to hear the Lord’s voice as I read?

Whoever the writer of the longest Psalm was, we can be sure that he had his share of failures and times when he had to confess his missteps in his service for God. Christ was the only one whose constant unfailing love for the Word of God was marked by total and joyful surrender every hour of every day – including the day of His death.

Where on the planet today could there be such a happy, energizing, and deeply fulfilling life-experience as the one outlined above? Where? I don’t have the GPS coordinates but I can share the location with you: your heart. Yes, yours. Your relationship with the Lord.

Walk carefully and closely with the Lord today.

Warmly in Christ
Peter Ramsay
